Happy 3rd Birthday Brayden!

It's hard to believe but our "baby" turned 3 on June 23rd. I can remember with such clarity my pregnancy with Brayden and all of the unknowns. I remember all of the fears and all of the blessings along the way as we were unsure about just what his health situation would be. I also vividly remember 2 months of bedrest with a 15-month-old at home to care for! (Well, at least a 15-month-old I wanted to care for! I was pretty useless without my helpers who took shifts to care for Nolan since I was told I couldn't lift anything near his weight!) And I remember going to the hospital that morning ready to be induced as I was now overdue! How does THAT happen after 2 months of trying to keep the little booger inside?!

I remember the relief and awe upon his arrival. Seeing he was "ok" and hearing his cry comforted me in a way no words could while I was pregnant. Still we didn't know what to expect for him and the days in the hospital were tense, but thankfully without incident. Soon we were home with our new little love. We couldn't have asked for these 3 years to have gone more smoothly or to have been filled with any more joy and love. I can't express the gratitude I have for the health and well being of my son, and my entire family for that matter. We don't always understand why we face the challenges that we do or why even we receive the blessings that we do, but I trust that God is in control and I am thankful for His hand in all of our lives.

Watching Brayden grow and change these 3 years has been incredible and there is so much we love about him - from his energy, to his smile, his big hugs to his little kisses, from his tool fascination to his candy addiction. Which brings me to his birthday party...

As I planned this party I kept finding myself saying "I can't believe I'm encouraging such an unhealthy habit!" But then I'd remind myself that it was just 1 day, and so I kept planning Brayden's candy themed party! Complete with a life size Candyland game for Brayden and his buddies outside and his own little candy shop for his guests to fill up their goody bags, our little sweet tooth was in candy heaven! I have since been reminding him that candy is a "once in awhile food", but it was worth it! Enjoy the photos and Happy Birthday Brayden!

Happy Birthday to Beau!

May 8, 2008 marked a milestone for us. We had a birthday party for a teddy bear! The boys decided that we needed to have a birthday party for Bray's favorite pal, Beau (not pronounced Bo, but actually rhymes with stew). And here I never even knew it was his birthday. We had a lot of fun with their idea. We baked Beau a cake (and since he can't eat it there was a lot for us!) and the boys even brought him presents (some of their own favorites stuffed into left over gift bags!). We played pin the nose on the teddy and when Grandpa Volz heard about what we were doing he even called and sang Beau a "Happy Birthday" message on our answering machine. The boys thought that was the greatest thing! So all this craziness in hopes not to stifle their creativity! So Happy Birthday to you Beau! (In case you are wondering, I don't have any idea how old he is!)

Loving the outdoors

We are so glad each day the sun shines and we can get outdoors! The boys really love being outside playing, helping Daddy, or just exploring. We also enjoy our good fishing trips and cook outs at Grandma and Grandpa Ballard's cabin and I wanted to share some photos of one of those fun times from earlier this spring.

Here is Denny fishing peacefully with his boys -- 3 fishermen, yet Nolan is the only one who caught a fish on this outing...

...But you can sure see that Brayden enjoyed trying! And by the way...we LOVE our smores, don't we Nolan!

A New View

Nolan's trip to preschool "child check' this spring revealed a few things... 1st he's ready and excited for preschool... and 2nd he needed to see an eye doctor! A quick optometry appointment later we would find out that the little dude indeed needed glasses. We had fun trying on some options and picking out glasses and remarkably Nolan's favorite pairs and mine were the same! I really lucked out because I wanted him to be able to pick some he liked, but I also didn't want him running around looking like a little dork!

He has been doing really well with them for a 4-year-old. He leaves them on almost all the time and after nearly 2 months we had no needs for repairs...That is until last weekend! Nolan was playing in the yard at Grandma and Grandpa Volz's house when he fell flat on his face. He hid his glasses from everyone and insisted he come home for his glasses case. He pulled in our driveway with Grandpa and I ran out his glasses case. He tried to sneak them inside with out me seeing and told me I couldn't look until tomorrow. I guess he was hoping they'd repair themselves overnight, because I could clearly see that a lens was missing! I asked him gently if he knew where the lens was and he just started streaming with tears. Poor little guy thought he was in big trouble! Anyway, we found the lens and got them repaired the next day.

Ironically, as I write this Nolan is not wearing his glasses! I can't find them! He had them on in the van yesterday and fell asleep back there. The next thing I knew they were no longer on his face and I can't seem to find them in the van. So needless to say I'll be searching in all the cracks and crevices! I guess maybe I should have considered taking advantage of that discount we were offered on a 2nd pair! We'll call that a learning lesson!

Thought I'd share some pics of the little guy in his specs. They're pretty cute, but you can see how they provide a little trouble for him in the van...and a few laughs for us!

HeartWalk '08 is on the way!

We are excited to say that our family is again participating in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and we hope you’ll join us! Last year our team, Bray’s Brigade, had around 30 walkers and raised more than $3,500 to benefit the AHA and support Brayden and all those with heart disease. Thanks to so many for your support! We even hope to topple those totals this year! Here is how you can help:

1. WALK WITH US! There is no fee whatsoever to walk. You can register online by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post. Then click "My Team Page" and "Join my Team." It's easy! The walk takes place Saturday, August 9 at Kirkwood Community College. Registration begins at 8:00 am and the walk at 9:00. I’ll get registered walkers more information about when and where our team will meet, etc. closer to the walk. It really is a fun morning with fun activities for the kids too, and we're hoping to have a nice big team!

2. DO A LITTLE FUNDRAISING! By signing up with our team you can have your own webpage where your friends and family can make contributions towards your efforts. If you’d rather not take the electronic route, I also have walker donation envelopes for you to collect cash or check donations. I’d be happy to get you one if you need one. Just let me know! Participants who raise over $100 get a free heart walk t-shirt after the event. Other prizes are available for those raising even higher amounts. Last year my dad won 2 round trip airline tickets to Orlando in a drawing for those who raised $500! Denny and I took a short trip to Orlando this spring! Thanks Dad!

3. MAKE A DONATION. Of course we appreciate all monetary contributions. I am convinced that the money we are collecting will really make a difference for people with heart disease and in preventing heart disease as well. We are so passionate about the cause, because someday it could make a real difference for Brayden. You can make a secure online donation by clicking on the link at the bottom of this post. If you prefer, you can mail a donation to our address: 3164 122nd Street Amana, IA 52203. Please make checks payable to the American Heart Association.

4. BUY A T-SHIRT. This year our team is having t-shirts made. Shirts are $10 or $5 if you have made a donation to the Heart Walk. If you’d like a shirt, please let me know what size. I need to place the order by July 1, so please get your orders in! You are welcome to walk with or without a t-shirt, so it’s up to you! (Well, wear something please! It just doesn’t have to be this t-shirt! )

5. DO SOME SHOPPING! Now that sounds like fun! Our family will be having a garage sale on June 13th and 14th with proceeds to benefit the AHA. They boys are also planning to sell lemonade and cookies! Feel free to stop by and see us!

6. SPREAD THE WORD. Do you know someone else who might be interested in joining our team or supporting the cause in some way? Let them know! Everyone is welcome to be a Bray’s Brigade walker or contributor! The more the merrier!

Thanks so much for your support of our family and this cause! We look forward to a great team with great success for a great cause!

Here are some photos from last year's HeartWalk

Brayden was all ready to go for HeartWalk '07. He and Nolan much enjoyed the inflatible fun before the walk. You can see his favorite, the obstacle course in the picture with Daddy.

Brayden smiles as the Gazette photographer lets him check out his camera after taking some photos of the little cutie. Grandpa Volz gets Brayden up close and personal with Ricochet the Roughriders mascot. Denny, Nolan, Brayden, and Jacob Turley (all the way from CA! :) catch a train ride to conclude their HeartWalk adventure.

One of Those Days!

Okay, so with a little prodding by my sister, I am blogging about our day in the Ballard house this past Monday. I warn this will be a lengthy one...Not a lot of pictures, but a LOT of narrative! To think I once thought I escaped those crazy Mondays when I left the workplace to stay home! These are the kinds of days that one should really leave OUT of the blog! But then that wouldn't be real life now, would it?

So our day was proceeding as planned on a beautiful spring day (FINALLY, a beautiful spring day!) I was feeding Mitchell a mid-morning bottle and told the boys that we could go outside when Mitch was done eating and they should both go potty and get their shoes. Both excited about the idea of going outside and taking Mitchell on his 1st stroller ride with us, Nolan and Brayden both bolted for the bathroom. This doesn't always happen! It often takes several requests to get the boys to hop to it and complete any task...so I thought we were off to a good start. Moments later Brayden returns with a guilty smirk on his face and whispers, "Mommy, I peed in the garbage can." "You what in the where?!!" "Noney told me to." Oh those little stinkers! Nolan thinks it's 1st class entertainment to con Brayden into doing naughty little things and more often than not, little bro can't resist! Well, fortunately there was a liner in the trash can, Brayden's aim was good, and clean up was easy! There is always a bright side! But this is just the beginning!

Needless to say the boys were not rewarded with outside-time concluding that little stunt and I offered that if they were good boys we could try it again after lunch. So our day proceeded and toys of all sorts made their way from one end of the house to the other, but we were having fun again. Soon it was lunch time and things were looking up. Mitchell was taking a little siesta so I decided that I would actually sit at the table and join the boys for lunch as I enjoy doing, but don't always accomplish. I thought a nice cold glass of chocolate milk would really hit the spot too. Well, at some point during the meal I got up for some reason...The details have blurred. I looked back toward the table just in time to see that beautiful, tall glass of chocolate milk nudged to the table's edge just far enough to CRASH to the ground, shatter, and of course spill that precious milk everywhere. Brayden Daniel was at it again! In his defense I saw enough to know it wasn't intentional. One of those crazy little accidents, but no less difficult to clean up. I have never seen glass shatter in such tiny pieces! Just my luck today, it was also time for Mitchell to eat now, so I did my best to do a quick clean up and instructed the boys not to get down from their chairs until I could finish completely or carry them away from the danger zone! Fortunately they did listen and there are no injuries to report!

After all the boys were through with lunch I really thought we NEEDED out of the house, so out we went... lunch dishes still on the table, breakfast dishes still on the counter, and shards of glass still hiding about the kitchen floor. That could all wait. We needed refuge! So into the great outdoors! We got to the potty without incident this time, plunked our shoes on (no coats, hats, or mittens!!!) and we were out the door! I pushed Mitchell out the door in the stroller and no sooner than I squeezed out, I gust of wind caught the door and it slammed shut. No it didn't hit anyone in the head or pinch any tiny fingers...but it was locked! No big deal I thought...We have a spare. But on this glorious day, of course, the spare was no where to be found. I tried every door, including the shop which wouldn't get us in the house, but at least would have a phone...All locked! We knocked on every neighbor's door on our street...nobody home! I started to get alarmed when I realized that though Nolan or Brayden could spend hours on end outside, sooner or later Mitchell would need to eat! Our rescue would begin when our heaven sent neighbors pulled up in their van. After several phone calls to see if I could locate a spare key within the vicinity and a good while at trying to pick our lock, we finally made entry when our 70-year-old neighbor climbed up onto our deck and got in our screen door. We love you Tom! I was praying the whole time that he would NOT fall the way our day was going! Alleluia! We were back inside our shipwreck of a house. Remnants of our chaotic day were strewn about, but at least we were in and Mitchell could dine as scheduled!

Ahh! I could breathe easy! I was seated in a cozy rocker cuddling and nourishing an adorable little baby. The boys were playing nicely in their rooms. It was hard to believe that with all that had gone on, I hadn't a care in the world... for a very fleeting moment. Then I heard that cry... Not an irritated, frustrated, or tired cry, but that one when you know he really hurts! As I rushed to Brayden's aid, I first saw Nolan bolting from the room (which is always a very incriminating reaction.) And next I saw that Bray's eye was already purple and swollen. Poor little guy! What had happened? "Noney threw that book at me" - between sobs. It is always frustrating when these boys who obviously love each other so much hurt each other! But now for the icing on the crazy day cake... The book that was central to this misfortune? The Bible! I could not believe my eyes! As Nolan and I discussed the gravity of this situation, he reassured me that it wasn't so bad because "it wasn't a paper page book." Gotta love those board books...no pages were ripped, torn, or damaged in the attack of his brother. Nolan was genuinely troubled and apologetic for hurting is brother...And eventually for using the "Good Book" as a weapon too.

Now how's that for a day?
This picture was taken 3 days after the craziest day ever. The swelling has gone down and the color subsiding.

In case you're curious, the rest of our week has been so much better. We spent some nice time outdoors today and got back in without incident!

Our Budding Farmers!

In the world of Nolan and Brayden, nothing is much cooler than the farm! Whether it is playing with their farm toys or sneaking a real combine ride, "farm things" thrill them! They were lucky to take a visit to "Arlan's Farm" (Uncle Joel's parent's place) to check out the baby chicks, cows, and everything from hay to cowpies! (Our thanks to Sable, the curious pup, for that cowpie discovery!) Couldn't help but share a few photos!
